Routers connect two or more logical subnets, which do not necessarily map one-to-one to the physical interfaces of the router. The term layer 3 switch often is used interchangeably with router, but switch is really a marketing term without a rigorous technical definition.
In marketing usage, it is generally optimized for Ethernet LAN interfaces and may not have other physical interface types.
The benefits of wireless LANs
Control Plane : in which the router learns the outgoing interface that is most appropriate for forwarding specific packets to specific destinations.
Forwarding Plane : which is responsible for the actual process of sending a packet received on a logical interface to an outbound logical interface.
Remote Access Servers
A server that is dedicated to handling users that are not on a LAN but need remote access to it. The remote access server allows users to gain access to files and print services on the LAN from a remote location.
For example : A user who dials into a network from home using an analog modem or an ISDN connection will dial into a remote access server. Once the user is authenticated he can access shared drives and printers as if he were physically connected to the office LAN.
